Advanced Therapeutic Massage | Bloomington, Indiana

Some conditions don't fit neatly into a single modality. Chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, neurological tension, and complex musculoskeletal dysfunction require a therapist who can move fluidly across techniques — assessing what the body needs and deploying the right approach in real time. Advanced Therapeutic Massage at That's The Rub is Bloomington's most comprehensive massage therapy session, built for exactly that.

What Is Advanced Therapeutic Massage?

Advanced Therapeutic is TTR's highest-tier clinical massage session. Rather than a single technique, it's a full clinical toolkit: deep tissue work, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, trigger point treatment, craniosacral techniques, and lymphatic drainage — combined based on what your assessment reveals. Every session begins with a brief intake to understand your current symptoms, history, and goals. Treatment follows from there.

Every therapist at TTR is trained in the KI Process™ through The Keplinger Institute. The KI Process is a structured clinical methodology that gives our therapists a systematic framework for assessment and treatment — so your Advanced Therapeutic session is never just guesswork. It's structured clinical work.

Who Is Advanced Therapeutic For?

Advanced Therapeutic is the right choice when your situation is complex, chronic, or hasn't responded to standard massage. It's well-suited for clients managing fibromyalgia, chronic neck and back pain, post-surgical soft tissue adhesions, repetitive stress injuries, neurological conditions with muscular components, and cases where multiple body systems are involved simultaneously.

It's also the appropriate choice if you're working with a physician, physical therapist, or chiropractor and need massage that integrates with — rather than duplicates — your other care.

What to Expect in an Advanced Therapeutic Session

Your therapist will begin with a brief structural and functional assessment — observing posture, palpating key tissue areas, and reviewing any relevant medical history or physician notes you bring. From there, they build the session around what the assessment reveals: which areas need myofascial work, where trigger points are active, whether craniosacral techniques are indicated, and how deep the tissue work should go given current inflammation or guarding.

Advanced Therapeutic sessions are 90 or 120 minutes. The complexity of the work doesn't compress well into 60 minutes — if you're dealing with a genuinely complex condition, give your therapist the time to work it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Advanced Therapeutic different from regular therapeutic massage?

Standard therapeutic massage addresses general tension and muscle tightness. Advanced Therapeutic adds clinical assessment, multi-modality integration, and structured treatment planning. It's the difference between addressing symptoms and addressing the underlying dysfunction producing those symptoms.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is required to book, but bringing any relevant medical records, imaging reports, or physician notes is strongly encouraged. The more context your therapist has, the more targeted and effective the session will be.

What's the KI Process™ and why does it matter?

The KI Process™ is a clinical massage methodology developed by The Keplinger Institute. It provides a structured framework for assessment, treatment planning, and technique selection — the same framework used in medical and physical therapy settings. At TTR, every therapist is trained in this process, which means your session is driven by clinical reasoning, not just intuition.

How many Advanced Therapeutic sessions will I need?

It depends entirely on your condition and how long it's been present. Acute conditions often respond in 3–6 sessions. Chronic conditions may require ongoing monthly work as maintenance. Your therapist will give you a realistic picture after your first session assessment.

Can I combine Advanced Therapeutic with other care like physical therapy or chiropractic?

Yes — and it often produces better outcomes when combined. Advanced Therapeutic massage complements physical therapy and chiropractic by addressing the soft tissue component those modalities don't fully reach. Bring your PT or chiro's treatment notes and your TTR therapist will coordinate accordingly.
